Even bad ideas masquerading as good (like Marxism using justice language) can appeal broadly because: (1) intellectual hubris tempts smart people to believe they can remake society from first principles, (2) young people feeling inadequate find totalizing narratives emotionally satisfying, (3) the promise of utopia offers escape from genuine struggle.
