The United States had normal life expectancy for a high-income country in the 1980s, but starting then, U.S. life expectancy began growing more slowly than every other rich country, and for the last 15 years, the U.S. has had the worst life expectancy of any rich country—worse than South Korea, Japan, Western Europe, Canada, and Australia.
